Zika Virus alarming outbreak in Pakistan


Zika Virus is caused by the sting of infected Aedes Aegypti mosquito. The mosquito is a daytime biter and spreads this virus just like dengue virus. The presence of zika virus can be diagnosed by blood or urine test.

Most common symptoms are headache, fever, rashes, muscle pain, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and joint pain. The symptoms of disease remain mild normally lasts for a week to several days. There is no treatment or Vaccination for it.

One can be exposed to Virus either through infected mosquito sting or it can be sexually transmitted. These virus posses serious threats to pregnant women. The virus is easily transmitted from pregnant woman to her fetus causing severe birth defects.

The reports gathered from Brazil have shown that the outbreak of Zika Virus causes GBS – Guillain Barre Synderom in newborns. GBS is a disorder that affects the nerve cells results in muscle weakness and ultimately paralysis.

TheisVirus is mostly found in Southeast Asian, African, American States and Pacific Islands. Recently the Zika Virus is being found in South Asia also. China has confirmed a case of Zika virus in Xinhua. A leading member of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) has warned that mosquitoes carrying the Zika Virus have been found in Pakistan.

“After this news the health Sector is on high alert and eager to seek a strategy for prevention,” Dr Muhammad Najeeb Durrani of GOARN told this.

For this purpose Pakistan should cooperate with international institutions like WHO and other UN agencies that are trying to cope with this international public health emergency at global level.
