ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath of office to MNA Zahid Hamid as the Federal Minister for Climate Change at a ceremony held at Aiwan-i-Sadr on Tuesday.
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the prime minister’s special assistants Barrister Zafarullah Khan and Khawaja Zaheer Ahmed, members of parliament and senior officials attended the ceremony. It was conducted in Urdu.
Mr Hamid’s appointment has been made in the run-up to a conference on climate change, to be held in France from Nov 30 to Dec 11.
The notification about his appointment said he worked extensively as a lawyer in the field of environmental law in the 1990s and campaigned for conservation. He also helped draft laws on environment protection.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established on the recommendation of Mr Hamid.
He also became the first director general of the EPA.
Mr Hamid has earlier served as federal minister for science and technology, and law and human rights. He also served as minister of state for defence, investment and privatisation.
