Sarfaraz Merchant reaches Pakistan to record statement

ISLAMABAD – Sarfaraz Merchant, one of the suspects in a money-laundering case against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in London, arrived here on Monday to record his statement with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Merchant will be recording his statement before an FIA inquiry team, constituted earlier by Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, regarding alleged funding to MQM from Indian intelligence agencies.

The FIA had earlier in March started investigation into allegations of funding by Indian intelligence agency RAW to the MQM and had summoned Merchant, to record his statement and provide evidence, if any.

FIA Islamabad Director Inam Ghani had contacted Merchant and had invited him to visit Pakistan, while the latter had promised to give a reply after consulting his legal team.
