KARACHI – Officials of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) say they have arrested a financier of the Safoora bus attack, a private TV channel reported on Friday.
Speaking at a press conference here, CTD in-charge Raja Umar Khatab said Adil Masood Butt – an al-Qaeda affiliate and vice chancellor of a private university – was arrested during a raid in Clifton area of Karachi on December 2 on charges of terror financing.
The investigators had earlier arrested Saad Aziz – a former student of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) – Pakistan’s premier educational institute, in connection with the carnage and his is trial is now expected to be conducted by a military court.
The military courts were set up as part of the federal government’s plan to expedite the trials of hardcore terrorists after a constitutional amendment. In May, At least eight gunmen shot dead over 40 passengers belonging to the Ismaili community, who were travailing in a bus near the Safoora Goth.
