Referendum on presidential system in Turkey, to be held by spring

Turkish law and Justice Minister has confirmed on Friday that a referendum for radical changes in constitution and introduction of presidential system of government will be held by the next year’s spring.

The presidential system of government will bestow even greater powers to the current president, Tayyip Erdogan.

The two biggest opposition parties, the secularist Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), both oppose ending Turkey’s parliamentary system and some opinion polls in the past have shown a majority of Turks do not want the change.
