VALLETTA, Malta – Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Friday joined leaders from 53 countries to attend the opening ceremony of the 24th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the Maltese capital.
Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his wife Michelle Muscat received Prime Minister Sharif and Begum Kalsoom Nawaz on their arrival at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz accompanied the prime minister.
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II – being the Head of the Commonwealth – opened the biennial meeting being held with the theme “Adding Global Value”.
Nawaz Sharif along with other heads of government had an official photograph with the Queen. Later, the prime minister attended the reception hosted by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma for the visiting dignitaries.
British Prime Minister David Cameron, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, French President Francois Hollande and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were among those who attended the event.
The Commonwealth meeting is held every two years in a member country. Malta is the only country to host the Heads of Government Meeting for the second time in a decade.
