LAHORE – Flight operation of the national flag carrier PIA will be suspended tonight and all the planes will be grounded in protest against government’s privatization plan, union leaders warned today.
A press conference of Joint Action Committee of PIA (JACPIA), a representative body of various associations & CBA representing PIA employees will be held later this afternoon. JACPIA will today finalize its future strategy on government’s decision.
JACPIA office bearers had given 48 hours to government representatives to take back the decision of privatization and at 2pm (today) this deadline will end. “I am confident that the flight operation of PIA will be suspended if government does not revise its decision,” President Peoples Unity of PIA Employees Sajid Gujjar stated this before the press conference.
Muhammad Navid Ch. Coordinator to Co-chairman PPP, Asif Ali Zardari said they had differences with rulers over the way they were going to privatize PIA.
Finance Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar said couple of days back that promulgation of PIA Corporatisation Ordinance would not alter rights of employees anyway and it aimed at granting autonomy to the PIA for taking decisions on professional lines instead of looking towards government on every issue.
