Panama Leaks: PM Nawaz discusses opposition’s TORs with legal team

A consultation meeting chaired by the Prime Minister (PM) discussed the terms of reference (TORs) put together by the opposition to probe into Panama Leaks is underway.

During the meeting, the TORs put forward by the opposition came under discussion. The participants also brainstormed over a possible strategy to deal with the mounting pressure being built up against the PM, sources said.

A decision was made during the meeting that the government will accept the Supreme Court’s decision on the matter. Opposition party leaders on Tuesday agreed on a joint strategy a judicial investigation of disclosures from the Panama Papers linking Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s children and several other Pakistanis to offshore companies.

PM once again stated that he presents himself first for the accountability. He added that the judicial commission will prove his honesty and will expose the lies of his political opponents.

However, opposition parties were still divided on whether they should ask the prime minister to step down until the judicial inquiry is concluded.

The leader of the Opposition in National Assembly (NA) and Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) senior leader Khursheed Shah stated that the opposition would write a letter to the PM regarding the TORs.

Leaked confidential documents spanning over nearly 40 years that spell out the extensive use of tax havens by politicians, world leaders, and celebrities to launder money and evade taxes through one of the most secretive companies the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, had taken the world by storm.

Many Pakistanis have also been named in their revelations.

The documents identify many Pakistani business tycoons and politicians including late two-time Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto as well certain members of the ruling Sharif family to have used tax havens to hide their wealth.
