Pakistan wins election of Universal Postal Union at Istanbul

Pakistan won election of the Council of Administration (CA) of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) during 26th Universal Postal Congress held at Istanbul, Turkey. The Universal Postal Congress is the supreme authority of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). It brings together plenipotentiaries of the Union’s 192 member countries every four year to discuss the state of the global Postal sector and decide on its future. The 26th Universal Postal Congress. (20 September – 07 October, 2016) was held at Istanbul, Turkey. The delegation for the Congress was led by Khalid Masood Chaudhary, Secretary Communications. Fakir Syed Shaharyaruddin, Director General, Pakistan Post along with two Senior Officers of Pakistan Post represented Pakistan in this Congress. Between Congresses, the Council of Administration (CA), and the Postal Operations Council (POC), made up of 40 member countries normally continue the work of the Union. These bodies are elected by 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union during the course of Congress.  As approved by the honorable Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan contested for the elections of Council of Administration (CA) during 26th Universal Postal Congress, Istanbul. (20 September-07 October, 2016). By the grace of Almighty Allah, Pakistan won election and became member of Council of Administration for a term of four-years (2017-2020). This great success witnesses the confidence of the international community on Pakistan and is a result of six month’s diplomatic campaign carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and coordinated efforts of Ministry of Communications and Pakistan Post Office Department approaching 192 UPU member-countries to vote in favor of Pakistan. The membership of CA will enable Pakistan to play its role in this body for the development of World Postal Sector for the next four years representing countries in the Asian-Pacific Region together with China, Australia, Korea, Malaysia, UAE etc. Pakistan has been elected as Vice Chairman of the council of administration.
