One Direction Earns First No.1 Single in Australia with ‘Drag Me Down’

Australia (Neo Web Desk) No Zayn Malik. No problem. One Direction has collected its first No. 1 on Australia’s singles chart with “Drag Me Down,” the boyband’s first post-Zayn release.

“Drag Me Down” bowed at No. 1 on the new ARIA Singles Chart (published on the weekend), eclipsing the pop group’s previous best No. 2 peak for “Live While We’re Young,” back in October 2012.

The new song has been an instant international hit since its impromptu release on July 31. The track blasted its way to 4.75 million streams on its day of release, smashing the one-day record previously held by Wiz Khalifa (4.26 million streams during its sixth week of release in April). And it bounded straight to No. 1 on the Spotify Global Chart on its first day of release, which is also a record. The tune, meanwhile, is new at No. 1 in the U.K., where it now owns the market’s streaming record with 2.03 million streams in its opening week.

Written by Jamie Scott, John Ryan and Julian Bunetta and produced by Ryan and Bunetta, “Drag Me Down” has had 17.7 million global streams and has sold 500,000 copies in its first week, according to Sony Music.

The song is lifted from the band’s forthcoming fifth album, which is due for release this November.  The British and Irish group’s reps have hinted that the official video for “Drag Me Down” should be a big-budget event. The four-piece cut the clip at NASA’s headquarters in Houston on the weekend, with long-term collaborators Fulwell 73 in the director’s chair.
