Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is observing a day of mourning today over custodial death of party leader Aftab Ahmed.
MQM also staged protest demonstrations in Karachi against the death of the worker.
“Owing to problems being faced by the general public, the party has decided to observe a day of mourning instead of shutter-down strike,” MQM Convener Nadeem Nusrat said.
Nusrat said MQM workers had died in the custody of law enforcement agencies previously as well but no action had been taken against them.
The party has termed the death a murder and demanded that the authorities conduct an inquiry of the extrajudicial killing.
“Our 56 workers have been killed while 170 are still missing since September 2013,” Nusrat said.
Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Raheel Sharif, and Director General Rangers Maj. Gen. Bilal Akbar have ordered to launch an inquiry into the matter and stated that justice should be ensured at all costs.
