Ministry extends Rangers’ special powers

ISLAMABAD:Rejecting the Sindh government’s summary over issue of Rangers’ powers in Karachi, the interior ministry on Tuesday approved an extension in the Rangers’ policing powers in the city for next 60 days.In a written a reply to the provincial government, the ministry contended that the Rangers were given powers under the Anti-Terrorism Act, adding that the provincial government was not authorised to limit the powers of a federal institution.Only parliament can change the law, it said. It is pertinent to mention here that the Sindh government had sent a summary to the federal government after the Sindh Assembly adopted a resolution curtailing Rangers’ powers in Karachi.
