Kolkata: Rs 24 cr cash, diamonds seized from engineer’s house

Sleuths of the anti corruption branch (ACB) on Friday recovered several crores of bribe money from the house of a sub-assistant engineer of Bally Municipality.

Most of the money was found hidden behind bathroom tiles and the roof top water tank.

ACB investigators raided Pranab Adhikari’s residence on the basis of a complaint filed by a builder, who claimed that the engineer wanted a bribe of 1 lakh to regularise the building that he had built.

The officials recovered bundles of currency notes hidden inside box beds and even the cistern and commode of an unused bathroom and several other places of the house, said a senior officer of the unit.

“We were shocked to find the unaccounted cash hidden behind the tiles of the bathroom wall and the water tank. The money was wrapped in plastic bags. The amount of money seized is worth a few crores and we are carrying on search operations to see if more money is stored,” said an ACB official.

“Not only cash, gold ornaments worth over Rs 14 lakh, diamonds, innumerable documents of term deposits and fixed deposits were also recovered against which the accused engineer failed to show any supportive documents,” he added.

“His wife tried to draw the attention of locals saying that a group of hooligans have entered the residence and are trying to loot the place. When the locals came to the spot, we disclosed our identity,” said an officer of the ACB.

Adhikari has been handed over to the cops of the Malipanchghara police station. On Saturday, he will be produced before the court.

Police also arrested the 50-year-old engineer’s son, an engineering student, for attacking an ACB sleuth during the raid and also for allegedly helping his father in taking bribes.

“Adhikari even tried to flee from the spot but we caught him finally,” said the officer.

“According to our information, Adhikari did not allow any outsider to clean the water tank,” said the officer.

Locals alleged that Adhikari is a dishonest officer and had been demanding bribes to sanction building plans in the area.
