Karachi: 90% drivers without licence

KARACHI: At least 90 percent of the drivers in the city are driving vehicles without having a valid licence or have a bogus licence. The licence statistics showed that only 250,000 drivers have valid licences while as many as 3,641,508 vehicles are registered in the metropolis, said the DIG Traffic Karachi, Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Tuesday. Talking to PPI, Dr Amir said that untrained drivers are causing traffic jams everywhere in the city. It has been observed that majority of drivers of commercial vehicles including dumpers, trucks, water tankers and minibuses have bogus licences issued from Fata, Gilgit-Baltistan and Waziristan and these sham drivers are behind 75 percent of accidents in Karachi, he added.

DIG said his department will initiate drive against these ‘killing machines’ and they will be made bound to get proper training of driving. He said in this regard he has already written an official letter to Sindh Transport Secretary to issue directives to all commercial vehicles to get valid licences for their drivers from Karachi Licence Department if they want to drive vehicles in the city.Amir said stern action would be taken against ‘driving schools’ in the city where learner drivers are being taught by untrained instructors who cannot teach driving skills to learner drivers as per the traffic law. The learner drivers are being charged a heavy fee by the Driving Schools but their training process is very poor which does not meet the requirements, he added.Surprisingly, more than 90percent of minibuses and so-called coaches running on Karachi roads are discarded public transport vehicles by Peshawar after the expiry of their useful engine life; however, these old, rusty, smoky and junk-class vehicles are being used as minibuses and “coaches” in Karachi with impunity, as Sindh government turns the blind eye towards the sensitive issue of engine fitness of public transport vehicles especially in Karachi.
