A resident of India had been swallowing knives since the past two months. Doctors believe that the man had some kind of rare mental disorder.
The patient told CNN that, “I just enjoyed its taste and I was addicted…how people get addicted to alcohol and other things, my situation was similar.” According tohim, he wasn’t sure why he started eating knives at the first place but he had developed a “taste formetal” and that he “loved the way blades tasted”. The 42 year old patient, who is also a father of two managed to keep his knife eating habit a secret from the family. But then he came to doctors with severe abdomen pain and weakness.
Doctor Jatinder Malhotra and his team took two days to form a diagnosis and surgery plan. After theteam conducted an ultrasound, a solid mass was found in the patient’s stomach. Afive hour long operation was held in Amritsar, Punjab during which 40 knives were taken out of thepatient’s abdomen, some folded, others unfolded. In fact, some of the knives wereeven broken and had started to rust. This was unnerving for doctors some of whom were well experienced in the field.
Doctors told the media that the patient is out of danger but he will be kept at the hospital underobservation of in-house psychiatrists. Eating 40 knives and still surviving, he must be ‘special’ in the eyes of all of his “Bhagwans”. “We were so nervous…a small mistake could have taken the patient’s life. In my 20 years of practice, I have never seen anything like it.” said Dr. Malhotra talking to the media.
As the patient regretted his urge to eat metal, he promised never to let his family down again.
