NEW DELHI – Indian fighter jet on Tuesday drops down five bombs in Barmer area of Rajasthan, resulting in an explosion heard in 10 kilometre radius, ANI news agency reported.
According to the Press Trust of India reports, a Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force shot down an unidentified balloon-like object over a town in the western state of Rajasthan which is located near the Pakistan border. Radars picked the movement.
The report quoted defence sources as saying that the object was likely to be a meteorological balloon and further investigation was underway. Another official said that the air force was on high alert on the India’s 67th Republic Day and the object was flying in from the western sector.
Another news outlet reported that cracks appeared in four buildings due to the impact of the explosion. Visuals showed a police team investigating the site of the accident. The national capital has been on high alert after the recent attack on the Pathankot airbase and pan-India arrests of over a dozen suspected Islamic State sympathisers.
The incident happened in Barmer, nearly 500 kilometre from Rajasthan capital Jaipur. Some villagers had reported an incident of certain metal pieces falling down from the sky, said the report. Indian air force was on high alert on the Republic Day which fell on Tuesday.
