Dh250,000 fine for insulting on Twitter

The Abu Dhabi Misdemeanor Court has imposed a fine of Dh250,000 on a sports club fan for insulting and abusing another club via social media and for posting offensive words and photos on the Internet via Twitter, according to a report in the Arabic daily newspaper Emarat Al Youm.

The management of a sports club in Abu Dhabi had filed a lawsuit against one of the fans of another club, accusing him of defaming their club via the social networking sites.

The plaintiff (the sports club) accused the supporter of the other club of posting a tweet slandering the club by using disparaging words against the club and its players.

The Twitter account was discovered to belong to the accused.

In the Misdemeanour Court, the prosector charged the accused of defaming a rival sports club and slandering its management and players on social media.
