Battle of Karbala – The sacrifice to save humanity from extinction

Muharram is the first month of Islamic calendar and so the new Islamic year brings a feeling of great sorrow and sadness in the heart of every Muslim.First ten days of Muharram are marked by the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, (a.s) his family (s.a) and his companions(r.a). The tremendous battle of Karbala has taken on different meanings within the numerous factions in Islam both religiously and politically. In this month we commemorate Imam Hussain’s victory (in martyrdom) which has permanently preserved Islam and saved humanity till the judgment day.

As Allah Almighty says:

“And we ransomed him (Abraham) with a great sacrifice. and We preserved his virtuous remembrance (i.e., praise) amongst the succeeding generations.”

The Glorious Quran 37:107

We’re all indebted to Imam Hussain (a.s) for his momentous sacrifice and therefore we must commemorate his loss and follow the path of truth that was shown to us by Imam Hussain (a.s).

Imam Hussain (a.s) was not only the grandson of prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) but also a revolutionary leader, a righteous man and the religious authority of Muslims. His sacrifice and the whole tragedy of Karbalareflect the fight between the oppressor and the oppressed.

Imam Hussain’s (a.s) main concern was to safeguard and protect Islam and Muslims. Yazeed bin Mu’awiya, on the other hand, was a wicked and power hungry person who was solely dependent on the might of the sword. Yazid never hesitated in using brutal force to rule over people by using any means. He declared himself as a ruler and demanded Imam Hussain’s allegiance. Imam Hussain (a.s.) realized that pleading allegiance to Yazid will jeopardize survival of the true Islam and so he confronted him and refused to recognized him as a caliph.

Yazid ordered to seize the ture Imam, (a.s) his family and his companions and surround their camp in Karbala. Yazid’s army cut off all the supplies and needs to the camp and made them suffer but the companions of Hussain would ratherchoose death than submitting to the tyrant.Yazid then ruthlessly murdered all of them after keeping them hungry and thirsty for days.

Karbala proved to be a clash between truth and falsehood, right and wrong, tyrant and oppressed. Imam Hussain (a.s.) sacrificed everything and everyone he had and let the truth triumph.

The tragedy of Karbala and sacrifice of Imam Hussain (a.s) has far reaching effects and it has provided us with many lessons to learn.

Stand for truth and righteousness:

The battle of Karbala teaches us to always stand with the truth irrespective of the consequences. No matter how many hardships come in our way we should never waiver from the right path. Imam Hussain (a.s) taught us that we can never let anytyrant, terrorist or wrongdoer define Islam.

Stand against the oppressor:

Imam Hussain(a.s.) knew that Yazid was an oppressor and a tyrant. Imam Hussain(a.s.) saw that the dignity and rights of people were being violated by Yazid so he made a stand, risked his life and defended those who were being oppressed. Imam Hussain (a.s) taught us to stand up against injustice and falsehood.

Role of women:

Despite all the threats Imam Hussain (a.s.) took his family with him to Karbala. Without the participation of the ladies, the whole struggle would’ve been forgotten. Ladies of the holy family raised awareness and defined the reality of Umayad and stripped them from religious framework.

Never accept humiliation:

Stand up for Godly principleseven if the whole world is against you and accept no humiliation. We must resist oppression in all forms. Imam Hussain (a.s) taught us to live with dignity and to never give up. He taught us never to bow down against tyrants even if it is going to cost us our life and the lives of our dear ones. Live a free life or die trying to live one.

The tragedy of Karbala has taught us so much. It is up to us to reflect and ponder about it, and apply them to our lives.
