48 killed in floods in eastern India

New Delhi ( Neo Web Desk) At least 48 people have been killed in recent days by severe flooding in eastern Indian that was set off by heavy rains, authorities said Monday.The floods have affected an estimated 3.9 million people in the state of West Bengal, and the situation remains grim in many areas, said Javed Ahmed Khan, the state’s disaster management minister.About 400,000 people have been moved to relief camps.Water from overflowing river dams is exacerbating the problem, Khan told.The heavy rains were brought by Cyclone Komen, which made landfall on the coast of neighboring Bangladesh late last week.In Myanmar, another country in the region, heavy monsoon rains in the past month have left at least 47 people dead and displaced more than 150,000 others.Myanmar President Thein Sein declared natural disaster zones in Rakhine and three other areas on Friday.
