3 accused remanded to FIA for another 14 days

ISLAMABAD – An Anti-Terrorism Court Islamabad yesterday extended for 14 days physical custody of three accused in the murder case of MQM leader Dr Imran Farooq.

ATC judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi conducted the hearing of the case and granted the Federal Investigation Agency the 14-day physical remand of the suspects including Moazzam Ali Khan, Khalid Shamim and Syed Mohsin Ali for their alleged role in the murder case.

After granting their physical remand, the court directed the investigation agency to produce the accused before the court again on December 28.

During the hearing, FIA official Shehzad Zafar submitted an application seeking 14-day physical remand of the suspects for further investigations.
However, the counsels for the accused raised objections over it and requested the court not to extend the physical custody.

After hearing arguments of both the sides, the judge granted the physical remand.

In this matter, the counter-terrorism wing of the law enforcement agency has registered a case against MQM chief Altaf Hussain, Muhammad Anwar, Iftikhar Hussain, Kashif Khan Kamran, Syed Mohsin Ali, Moazzam Ali and Khalid Shamim.

They are facing charges of conspiracy, assistance, abetment and ultimately assassination of Dr Imran Farooq, ex-parliamentarian and senior member of MQM in London on September 2010.
The case has been registered under sections 302, 34, 109, 120B of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The government of Pakistan through the FIA’s counter-terrorism wing is the complainant in the case.

MQM leader Dr Farooq was stabbed to death near his apartment in Green Lane, in London, in September 2010.
